Plucky's Boring Machine

"Yes," Plucky said. "You see, us gnomes like digging and so I felt it was quite natural to build something that would aid us in doing so." He led them down through yet another trapdoor where they were greeted by an even stranger sight than the horseless carriage.

From what they could see, it appeared to be a large metal box resting on a platform. As they walked around it, they saw this large conical screw-shaped thing was attached to it. Plucky informed them he called it the drill, and was the part that bored into the ground. The platform it was on could be made to tilt, but that was wasn't necessary as he considered they were far enough below ground anyway. He then admitted this was going to be the first actual test of the boring machine which didn't inspire the foursome any.

Seeing their disbelief, he exclaimed, "Stay well back! No need to risk any of your lives." Upon saying that, he opened a door in the machine and climbed in, shutting the door firmly behind him.

The machine suddenly started making a loud noise that made the four hold their ears, and they saw that the part Plucky called the drill started turning around at a rapid speed.

1. Just then, something went badly wrong.
2. The drill gave a high pitched whine as it slowly dug into the earth.
