"I think that it would be better if we left town as soon as possible
instead," Fred replied to Plucky's offer of a ride back to his home. "We
are supposed to be executed at dawn, on no better grounds than that we are
strangers here. We would like to be a good distance outside the town gates
before anyone discovers our escape."
"Unfortunately the only gate in the town wall is well guarded at all times," Plucky replied. "Come back to my home, and I'll hide you till we can come up with a plan for getting you out of town. Perhaps I can invent something for getting you either over or through the wall - or even under it." "Why are you willing to help us?" Khrusti asked suspiciously. "Though we gnomes are tolerated by the locals, we aren't in sympathy with their xenophobia. We like to think that we are a little more civilised." The four quickly decided that they had little alternative to accepting Plucky's help. So all four of them walked behind his machine as it chugged through the fortunately empty streets.
