At the Top of the Elevator Shaft

The elevator rose smoothly, until after twenty seconds or so it gradually
slowed to a stop. On the opposite side to that by which they had entered
it, the rock wall had now given way to a large chamber. But not a bare,
rocky chamber like those which they had seen previously. This one was
luxuriously carpeted and had fine tapestries covering the walls. It was
well lit, though it was unclear just where the light was coming from.
Several comfortable armchairs were dotted about, and there were also
tables, desks and bookshelves made of highly polished wood.
A handsome, well-dressed, middle-aged man was sitting in one of the armchairs. When he saw them arrive, he stood up. "Well, if it isn't Princess Astra and her new friend!" he said genially. "You found your way here, then, and in doing so have passed the little initiative test that I set for you. But you will both be wondering who I am, for even Astra has not met me face to face till now, since our previous dealings were conducted through magic at a distance. I am the dragon-mage Minestus, and this chamber is where I spend most of my time when in my human form.
