Out of Place Technology?

"They're perfectly safe. Well, the one's in my world are," she corrected, more to herself than anything. "Anyhow, we're going to have to risk it."

"I know. That doesn't make me feel any better about it."

Stacy stepped onto the travelator first. When nothing untoward happened, Astra gingerly followed suit. Neither had to worry about keeping their balance as the travelator kept at a brisk walking pace. It didn't slow down or speed up once. The distance they travelled meant that they soon got bored with the journey, having nothing but blank rock walls to stare at.

When it came to an end, neither Stacy or Astra had any idea how far they had travelled. Stepping off, they found that after a few paces they found themselves looking at a glass barrier identical to the previous. Indeed, Stacy found that the barrier could be lowered exactly the same way.

Carrying on, they found the passageway curving to the right slightly. It terminated in what looked like a small circular alcove.

"Great," Astra sighed. "Yet another dead end."

"Not necessarily." Stacy had noticed something and pointed it out to Astra.

Astra shrugged. "So what?"

"You'll see." Stacy grabbed Astra by the arm and dragged her into the alcove.

"Hey, what..." Astra was cut off by a sudden whirring noise. Then she realised they were moving upwards. She glanced over at Stacy and gave her an puzzled look. "You knew this would happen?"

Stacy, who had now removed her hand from Astra's arm, nodded. " We're standing on what I would call an 'elevator'. There was a small gap between the floor and the elevator. That's what gave me the idea and what I pointed out to you."

"So how are we moving? Magic?"

"I've no idea. I would have assumed the elevator was attached to some machinery that was pushing us upwards, but given our current situation, I can't rule out magic."
