The End of the Empty Lands

Brushing aside some of the local flora, they get a brief glimpse of a big
cat. Even so, Astra recognised the creature as a puma. It had smelled
their presence, but didn't seem to be too bothered by it. Fred and Astra
looked at each other with excitement. Were they finally leaving the vast
expanse of jungle they had called the Empty Lands. A few metres along the way they felt that they would be almost deafened by the sudden increase in noise surrounding them. The buzz and hum of insects had been replaced by a myriad of monkey and bird calls, as well as the occasional growl of a big cat. Confused, the pair step a few paces back. Sure enough, again all they could hear was the sound of insects. It was like they were going through an invisible barrier of some kind. There was no appreciable change in their surroundings. Several monkeys crashed through the foliage above them. It appeared they were going to enter the Empty Lands, but they changed direction instead. The noisy monkeys disturbed a couple of beautiful birds of paradise which flew overhead before suddenly veering off. It was almost like the animals were afraid of the area.
