At Last, A Hopeful Sign

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 36154

Astra looked at the ring, so obstinately stuck on her finger. "This is the only possession which I now have," she said, "yet it is the one thing that I wish that I could be without. Even being chained up by the Dragon was preferable to wandering lost in this deserted land, wondering what new misfortune might befall me at any time. Still, at least I'm not alone." As a gesture of gratitude, she placed her hand on Fred's forearm for a moment.

From the position of the sun, now high in the sky, they judged that they had had only a few hours sleep, not enough to stop them from still feeling tired. But their main immediate problem was the growing hunger that they both felt. They briefly debated whether they should go back to look for their supply of berries and nuts, but they were far from sure that they would be able to find the precise spot again. And, though there was no animal life, the vegetation continued to grow luxuriantly, so that they expected that they would find more edible berries before long.

So, after drinking from the clear water of the lake and then quickly bathing, they pushed on along the shore. Then something happened that lifted both their spirits. It was Fred, with his keen eyes, who saw it first. "Look!" he said, pointing. Somewhere well ahead of them, a dot was drifting slowly across the sky from left to right. Though the range was too great to make out any details, it could only be a bird. Perhaps at last they were coming to the end of what they had begun to call the Empty Lands.

  1. They see a land animal.
  2. They find something to eat.
  3. Astra's next misfortune is not long in coming.
