The Empty Lands had been getting on Fred and Astra's nerves, and even
Astra felt much more cheerful now that they were leaving them behind.
Since they had no weapon, their only worry was that they might encounter
an animal large enough and fierce enough to pose a threat to them, though
they thought that this was unlikely. Unless it should happen to be a human
animal, of course, for the chance of encountering people must now be
higher than it had been.
Though they would have liked to supplement their diet with meat, they lacked anything with which to trap or kill the local wildlife, or a means of skinning or cooking anything that they somehow did manage to catch. But they found more edible fruit and nuts without any difficulty, and sated their hunger. Afterwards they continued to follow the edge of the lake, which still ran - as far as they could judge - due north. It was now clear that it was a very big lake indeed.
