In Astra's dream it seemed to her that she and Fred had been wandering for
many years in this strange land, lost and alone, without ever seeing
another living creature apart from insects. Fred was little changed, but
the years had not been kind to Astra herself. The loss of her hair had
been but the first stage in a rapid process of deterioration that had seen
her youthful beauty fade away long before its time. Now she was not merely
bald, but a wrinkled, stooping, shrunken old woman. The silver ring was
still stuck fast on her finger.
They came to a pool of clear water, and Astra looked at her reflection in it. But the reflection was even worse than the dream "reality", for she saw herself reflected as a skeleton. Then out of each eye socket of the grinning skull crawled a fat maggot. That was when she awoke screaming. This woke Fred, who saw Astra sitting up and gazing around her wild- eyed. "What's the matter?" he asked, deeply concerned. "A nightmare," she said, her voice trembling. "I think it was the ring that caused it. It's evil. If I had a knife I'd cut my finger off rather than continue to wear it." To Fred's alarm, she started sobbing. In over a year he had never seen Astra cry before. He took her in his arms and tried to comfort her.
