Astra and Stacey had emerged into an enormous cavern, perhaps a hundred
yards across. In the centre of the roof, far above their heads, there
was a small gap through which they could see blue sky. This was why the
light was so much brighter. Though it was still quite dim by normal
standards, after the near darkness that they had been used to it seemed
almost dazzling at first.
When their eyes had adjusted, they saw that there were a number of passages leading out of the cave. But far more significant was that in the exact centre of the cavern was a stone plinth, and standing on the plinth was:
