The river was not very wide, but the coldness of the water took Stacy's
breath away and her legs and arms quickly seemed to lose all of their
strength. About half-way, she realised that she wasn't going to make it.
She wasn't yet in danger of sinking, but the strength of the current was
dragging her downstream faster than her forward progress. Soon she would
be swept away into darkness.
Seeing that she was struggling, Astra dived back into the water and came to her aid. "Grab me round the waist," she gasped. Stacy did so and then, slowly and laboriously, Astra swam to the bank. She had to head more upstream than across it in order not to be taken downstream. The two of them lay down on the far side for several minutes to regain their breath, no words being spoken except a gasped "Thank you!" from Stacy. Her clothes were soaking wet and the air was chilly, and she found herself shivering. When she had got back sufficient energy, she took off her sneakers and socks, deciding that she would be more comfortable without them. Whilst she was doing so, Astra stood up. "Time we were moving on," she said. "Besides, if we walk briskly then we'll dry off more quickly and will feel warmer."
