"Josh, I have had a thought. Could you throw that pawn back to me? I would like to take a look at it." Josh turned around and edged toward his right, and lofted the pawn at a high angle, past the large statue of a white pawn and into the Doctor's open palms. The Doctor looked at the pawn, and then placed it in his pocket. The human Fred called out, "What are you thinking, Doctor?" "The castling move was quite showy. I am wondering what happens if we can push a pawn to the end of the board?" "Another statue, of a queen?" "Perhaps, although I think that we would have to formally declare that we want a queen. But we might also get something - or rather, someone - else." Susan observed, "Do you think that someone might be sending a message using the little pawn?" "If it is, I am not able to read it. But my thought is that it could be .... Well, we may not be alone. But capturing the black king may be key to solving the riddle." The Doctor then called out, "Pawn to King's Bishop Four." The pawn slid into place, within one square of Josh. "What is the idea?" said Josh. "The rook could crush me." "I doubt that. An exchange of a knight for a rook does not make sense. Whoever is moving black has played a rational game thus far." "But what if they are not rational?" "Then we find out what happens when one of us is 'captured.'" Josh could now see why the Doctor asked for the pawn. The game:
