As the Doctor had anticipated, their unseen opponent was unwilling to
sacrifice rook for knight. Josh had wondered whether Black might push
forward the Queen's Pawn to threaten him, but then he realised that to do
so would expose the rook to being taken by Demifox Astra (the King's
Bishop). He was coming to realise that it was much harder to see what was
going on now that he was down at board level, compared to the normal view
in a game of chess from above. He hoped that the Doctor would be able to
cope with the difficulty.
In the event, it was Black's Queen's Bishop's Pawn that moved forward one square. This would allow the Queen's Pawn to be pushed forward next move to threaten Josh without exposing the rook. It also opened the possibility that the Black Queen might come out next move as far as the rook file, where it could "pin" Susan's knight in line with the Doctor. Though that would place the Black Queen on the edge of the board, not usually a favoured location for a major piece since it could cover fewer squares than if near the centre.
