It seemed certain that the flying creature must have seen them. Therefore
they needed to get as far away as possible from their current location,
and preferably out of the valley altogether, for it offered little in the
way of cover and was also likely to be the first area to be searched. Of
course, they had no way of being sure that whoever the creature was
scouting for would be hostile, but far away from home in a strange land it
seemed safest to work on that assumption.
Since the giant bat, if that was what it was, had come from the hills to their left and had returned in the same general direction, they decided to make for the higher ground to their right, on the opposite side of the valley. They recalled from the previous day that the upper slopes were thickly wooded, and indeed they could see the darker areas under the moonlight showing where those woods must be. If they could hide themselves under the trees before they were pursued, then they should be fairly safe from discovery. No more than ten minutes of brisk walking brought them to where the ground started to slope upwards. At first the rising ground was covered only with long grass, but its surface was uneven. It was difficult to keep up a good pace with only the light of the moon to go by, for there was always the risk of stumbling and spraining an ankle. Further up, there were scattered bushes and clumps of brambles to contend with, which gradually became more numerous. Astra let out a curse when her already ragged clothing caught on one tendril and ripped further when she tugged it free.
