There was a full moon, so that Astra could clearly see the hills on either
side of the valley. An hour into her watch, she noticed fleeting shadows
passing over the range to her left as she faced up the valley. She gazed
up at the sky, but could see no sign of clouds that could have caused the
shadows, though the moonlight was bright enough that she would have
expected any that there were to be easily seen.
She realised that one of the shadows was now heading down from the hills and looked as though it was coming directly towards them. She wondered whether to wake the others, but decided that there was no point. Even if the shadow was in some way harmful, there was nothing that they could do. It was coming too fast and covered too large an area for them to hope to avoid it.
