Which Exit?

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 35380

Checkers looked hastily away from the globe, and replied, "I would really like to move on."

Fred thought that he knew why Checkers was ready to leave. He had felt the same way when he tapped the statue, and the stone had darkened. He asked, "What are you thinking?"

Checkers lower lip tightened, and her eyes glazed. She took a deep breath, and replied, "I am worried for my people. I have never been one to be superstitious, but with the change in the caves, and Astra's transformation, I know something is going on that plays by its own set of rules. And one of the rules seems to be, if you are coated with that brownish rock, you are under some sort of spell. And I am afraid that I may have triggered it by reading from that book."

"You are drawing that conclusion from one event - Astra's transformation into the dragon, and her statue being encased in that material. I am not a philosopher, but I think that declaring a general conclusion on the basis one event is considered a fallacy. But suppose that you are right. Does being under a spell have to be a bad thing? While I think that Astra would find it easier to be a princess, it was the fact that she aquired the power of a dragon that allowed her to escape her captor. And, to be honest, while the caverns are different, the old caverns did not have the tapesties and the food. So your people could be better off, for all we know."

"Maybe. But they are so far away. I just want to see what lies beyond the ampitheater, and maybe we will find something that will help Astra."

"There are a lot of exits here. Some of them probably lead to the same place. Do you have your diptych handy?"

Checkers gave him her diptych. He drew a circle in the middle of it, and drew six lines outside one of the exits to indicate the six little benches of the tiny market. This exit was in the northwest part of the circle, as Fred drew it.

"Now I want to be careful so that I am sure that we do not get lost. I want to investigate the rooms in sequence, so that we know where everything is. That means that, unless there is a compelling reason, we do not go into any rooms beyond the first ones that we enter."

Checkers agreed. The first exit that they investigated was the one

  1. immediately toward the north of the little market exit (closer to, but not necessarily leading to, the Arsenel).
  2. immediately toward the south of the little market exit (closer to, but not necessarily leading to, the Hostel).
