The Toppled Statues

They soon discovered another group of statues close to the shore. To their
surprise they found that every one of them had been somehow knocked over!
What really worried them, though, is that whatever force had been
responsible for knocking over the statues had done so recently. This could
mean that it was still in the immediate vicinity. Looking around, they saw that the force had been extremely selective. The only jungle vegetation affected was that crushed by the weight of the toppled statues. The surrounding vegetation appeared to be untouched. Just then they heard a distant thud from behind them. They were shocked to see that the first statues they had discovered were being systematically knocked over, one by one. It seemed that the strange force that for some reason was toppling the statues either had not noticed them, or had and was ignoring them, for the moment at least. For that, they were grateful.
