"What is this strange device?" Astra asked. "It looks as though one could
just pass through it into whatever strange place it is showing us, but
when I touched it it was unyielding, and felt cold and smooth."
"It seems to be a portal like the one I came through," Stacy said. "That too became hard and unyielding when I tried to return through it. [25927] Perhaps they are both strictly one-way, leading here but not away again?" "What are you talking about?" Astra asked. "You said nothing about coming here through a 'portal'." "I didn't think that you would believe me." Astra looked at her sharply. "You had better tell me everything," she said. So Stacy told of waking up in a strangely deserted world without her memory, and of finding the dog and then coming through the portal. "I recognise the place we can see through this portal," she continued. "It's another part of my world, but it seems to be equally as deserted." "You say 'my world'," Astra responded. "It must be a peculiar place indeed, judging by what I can see of it through this 'portal' as you call it. I like the bronze lions, though. I believe your story, Stacy, strange as it is. Why would anyone make up something like that? Besides, your outlandish attire attests to its truth." Stacy had not yet tried touching the portal herself, but felt that she might as well do so. Perhaps her expectation that it would not allow her to leave was incorrect.
