Too Risky

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 34660

"I think that trying to swim across the lake would be too risky," Fred said. "I am a strong swimmer and I imagine that you are too, but we can't see the far shore from here. For all we know it could be many miles distant. We would risk one of us getting tired at a point where either to go back or to go on would be too far. Besides, swimming is far slower than walking. So, although the distance would be less if we swam across, if the lake is roughly circular it will probably be as quick or quicker to walk round the edge."

"I suppose that you're right," Astra conceded.

They swam back to shore. The combined effect of the water and Astra's exertions when swimming had caused her shift to disintegrate a little more. She sighed. "This isn't really concealing very much any more. I think that I had better cut my losses and turn it into a loincloth, to better cover the most important area."

Once she had done that, they commenced walking round the lake. This took them first north-east and then, as the shore curved a little, northwards. They walked for several hours.

Then:

  1. Dusk fell.
  2. They found a large statue carved out of a great block of stone. Going by how extremely weathered it was, it seemed centuries, maybe even millennia, old.

JH (with option 2, I have something like the Easter Island statues in mind)
