After a couple of hours, the already dim light beneath the jungle canopy
began to fade. "It looks like it will be dark soon," Fred said. "We had
better find a good spot to spend the night."
"We'll probably be all right wherever we choose," Astra replied. "There seems to be a thick covering of dead leaves just about everywhere, so as long as we don't pick somewhere where there's a hidden tree root underneath the leaves we should be fairly comfortable." They agreed on a spot, had some more of the fruit, and then both settled down for the night. They had decided that in the apparent total absence of any animal life larger than an insect, there was no need for one of them to keep watch.
