It was agreed that climbing over the rocky part of the spit was out of the
question, as we would probably suffer injuries. We had no idea of the
regenerative powers of our new forms so that was a risk we couldn't take.
Velus had been a faithful companion up to now, so we didn't really have
the heart to leave him behind. That meant trying to see if there was a gap
in the spit we could swim through. As we swam along we could see there was no sign of any break in the spit of which we could take advantage. Several miles along and it seemed hopeless. The spit as far as we could see curved around in a unbroken line into the near distance. Soon we would have to rest again and consider our options. We could either continue to search for the elusive break in the spit, or we could choose to climb over the spit and swim back to the brig's location, but it would mean leaving Velus behind.
