If the brig had been beached on the far side of the hill then we might
easily have missed seeing it, but fortunately it is a little along from
the highest point. It had presumably been driven aground by some past
storm. It had been unlucky to finish up on the rocky part of the spit; a
little further along, and it would have grounded on sand, where it might
have suffered minimal damage and been refloatable. As it is, we can see
that the masts are down and that there is a gaping hole in the side. We
can't tell how long ago it was wrecked. We'd have expected there to be at
least some survivors, but no doubt they are long since gone from here.
Naturally we want to go and explore the vessel, but we have a slight problem: our lack of legs! How are we going to get across the spit? For the ship is of course on its seaward side. I discuss the problem with Fred. We seem to have three options: to carry on paralleling the spit, in the hope that at some point there will be a break in it that will link the lagoon to the open sea; to use our arms to drag ourselves across the spit just here, which given its rocky nature would be very uncomfortable and would risk at least minor injuries; or to go back a couple of hundred strokes, where we can cross a sandy portion of the spit - still not exactly comfortable, but better than dragging ourselves across rock. Of course, only the first of these options would allow Velus to come with us. Fred and I (Velus has no way of expressing an opinion, of course) decide on:
