Fred Awakens

To keep herself from becoming bored, she began reviewing in her mind the strange events since Belboz had introduced her to Fred. So much had happened that this seemed like a long time ago but, though it was hard to keep track of time underground, she guessed that it was at most a couple of days, maybe even less.

Checkers had assumed that it was unlikely that Fred would come round before Belboz returned, but after an hour or so she heard a groan.

"Fred," she said softly. "Are you awake?"

He turned his head towards her and his eyes opened. "Checkers. What happened?" he asked.

"Take it easy - don't try to get up. You've been very ill; you nearly died."

"I don't feel ill, though there's a dull ache in my shoulder. But I feel weak - and hungry and thirsty too."

"I'll get you some food and water."

Checkers got Fred something to eat and drink, and then made sure that he did not try to eat too much too quickly. Meanwhile she filled him in on what had happened since he lost consciousness, not forgetting to mention that Astra had regained her voice and the vow that she had made (though she did not tell him about the talisman that Astra had found).

"She made that vow for me?" Fred said wonderingly, when Checkers had finished.

"She did indeed. Of course, there's no chance that Belboz will hold her to it."

"I wonder. If he didn't intend to, then why not say so?"

1. Fred's eyelids began to droop, and soon he was sleeping again.
2. Just then, Belboz returned.
