Upon hearing that she wanted the sheriff, the boys took off pell mell.
The woodsman, Charlie, told her that it could take hours to find the
sheriff, let alone anyone. Andrea insisted. As fortune would have it, it
took Charlie only two hours to return with the sheriff, Big John Roberts.
John Roberts too was thinking revenue for the local town when he heard the
story. He was an honest man when it suited him, and turned a blind eye
when it suited him. When he saw Andrea, however, his heart fluttered and
his wallet jumped. Immediately he had Charlie bury the coachman properly by the side of the path. Then he and Charlie hitched their horses to the carriage and pulled it to the sheriff's house. The horses made a terrible team, but managed to get there by evening. There John paid Charlie a fair day's wage and sent him home. Then he brought Andrea and her things inside the house. The house was among the nicest in the area, with second story, barn and fields attached. John had made them so from his sheriff's labors and farming on the side. For now, however, his pursuits turned to gain, and what he wanted of his royal guest.
