A kitchen helper named Jim had taken the giant sack of potatoes from the
kitchen master and was putting it into smaller, more manageable, sacks.
As
he performed his work, he overheard the Agnew ask Torrance about killing
the spy
from where he sat behind the thin,
wooden wall. He became curious, but shuddered as he heard Lady Andrea's
name mentioned. Jim was a loyal character, and had admired Lady Andrea's great beauty from afar. But he was new to castle life and had few friends. His closest friend was Milton, with whom he trusted all his confidences. As the killer walked away, Jim jumped and ran to Milton, who was busy slicing vegetables with a blunt knife. "Milton, can you help me with this sack of potatoes for a moment?" The cook nearby scowled, but nodded. Milton came with Jim to the potatoes. "Listen, Milt. I just heard Agnew promise that giant Torrance Blood 20 gold to kill Lady Andrea. He said she's a traitor, but I know it isn't true." "Are you sure?" asked Milton in astonishment. He was always skeptical of stories, but knew Jim would tell the truth. Jim nodded earnestly. "I heard it myself. She must be warned." Milton paused. "The guards won't believe us. They'll believe Agnew. We can't do anything." "I'll go myself, but I need a horse," said Jim. "Where are you going to get a horse?! Besides, you can't ride." "I too can ride. What about that chambermaid? Lydia." Lydia was cute, polite and pretty, and Milton had a crush on her. "No way!" exclaimed Milton. Jim glared at Milton. "Ok. But I'm not covering for you to the master." Milton excused himself to the restroom and found Lydia. She heard the story and believed its truth. Soon thereafter, the burly kitchen master found Jim. "Hey! Jim! C'mere. Can you ride? Apparently the messengers are busy. Good. Lady Andrea has forgotten her kit. One of the chambermaids has a horse outside waiting for you. Find her, but hurry back. I need you to prepare dinner."
