The mustiness of the chamber fills you with a sick dread as you
pull on the
bandages layered over the figure's head. The soft wrappings come away from
the body's
face and you tremble as you discover who it is. "My God!" you whisper
hoarsely, "it is
Sir Paulito!" You had hoped that you would find him still alive, that the
grave somewhere
above you was only a trick, a lie. But here is the mighty knight himself,
laid out in a
funereal pit. But who had killed him? Who had tended to his mortal
remains in such a
queer and dark fashion? What was the meaning of the wrappings or the
purpose of the
ornately carved mausoleum? Who were these people who sang so strangely in
the
chamber just beyond?
Your questions and musings are cut short when the dead knight upon whom you crouch so gingerly suddenly jerks and comes to life! "Mmmm mmph uhm MMPH UMM!" he cries out. You throw your hand across his mouth. Luckily it is still gagged with bandages and none but yourself has heard his muffled voice. He stares at you with hate in his eyes and struggles against his bonds. You jab your finger across your lips, "Shhhhhh!" Paulito calms down and you gently take the wad of gauze out of his mouth. "Sir Paulito, I have come to rescue you!" you whisper jubilantly. "Get me out of these damn bandages!" he demands through clenched teeth. You hear the pleading in his voice and wonder at its urgency. But you realize that he has been through an incredible ordeal and was on the verge of being buried alive. You pull out your knife and cut the wide bands that pin his arms to his body. You cannot help but marvel at the great care that was taken to wrap him up. Each limb has been separately wrapped about with thin, narrow strips of the cloth-like bandage, his trunk and crotch as well. And then over the narrow bandages a separate band of wide strips had been layered, tying his legs together and binding his arms against his body You bend down and rip the bandage apart from the soles of his feet to the split of his thighs. The outer wrappings fall away and you suddenly think of a snake shedding its skin. The idea gives you the jitters. You step out of the pit and Paulito stands up, furiously trying to rip the rest of the bandages from his body. You are about to hand him your knife when a large black hand clamps down upon your shoulder.
