Slaves of the Pit

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 3438

With a lightning quick thrust, you stab your knife deep into the man's ape-like neck. His hand lets go of your shoulder and as you turn to face your opponent you whip out your sword. The man is huge and as black as night. His head is shaven bald and but for the sandals on his feet, his only clothing is a cotton skirt dyed red with zigzags of black. The man gurgles, both his hands clamped against the blade, blood pouring through his fingers. He stares at you with bewilderment and then takes a step toward you. You raise your sword and he takes another step forward. You cannot believe that he is still standing. But his next step is uncertain and with his last he totters and falls to the ground.

It is only then that you notice the three other men standing at the entranceway to the second chamber. They are almost identical to the dead man at your feet; for all you know they might be brothers. Without a single word the three black men rush you, scimitars held high. You glance over to Sir Paulito, hoping for some help in this rather dangerous situation. But the man can only stare at the hulking figures that bear down on you. Sir Paulito is weaponless.

Your shield is strapped securely to your back and you curse yourself for not having unslung it earlier. Your eyes dart to Paulito's shield, still lying at the foot of the pit. But it is too late. The three giants are upon you! You raise your sword and parry the scimitar that flashes down to slice you in half. You jab at the second man and force his blade away. This leaves you open to the third man and only by dint of your quick reflexes do you avoid finding his sharp steel deep within your bowels. The fight continues like this for what seems like an eternity. Soon you are bleeding from a multitude of cuts and wounds, but so are your three attackers. Still, you are slowly but surely losing ground. You are being forced back up the passage from where you came.

This doesn't worry you. You think that if victory is impossible that you can escape through the grave mouth back into the upper cavern. But as you are pushed back by the irresistible might of the three giants, you discover with dread that the mouth has been closed up and only a blank earthen wall waits at the end of the passageway. With your back against the wall you make what you know is your final stand. With a rush of savage desperation you strike out with a flurry of flying sword strokes. You want to kill these three silent giants. You want to kill them because they are your enemy, because they serve some dark and secret force that lies within the subterrene depths somewhere below your feet, and because during this entire fight they haven't said one single word and that's really starting to piss you off.

Unfortunately, the three men are bigger and stronger than you and they ward off every stroke. And then it happens. A shiny scimitar finds its way through your defenses and slices into your gut. With a twist and a savage pull the blade rips open your belly and your mangled internal organs slump to the floor with a sickening squish. 'Well this sucks...' you think as your vision fades from red to black.

  1. The three men turn around and walk back down the passage.
