Lady Andrea would have been concerned that the Chamberlain had hired an
assasin to take her life, but it would not have surprised her. As soon as
she found a suitable replacement, his life was over. But her attention
was now elsewhere. As the road grew more rocky and the trees thicker, she
knew the journey would be more perilous. Finally they came upon a small
town with a pallisade in the middle. This was the last baston of
civilization in her lands before entering the badlands that no one
governed. The badlands were a hodge-podge of trading towns, people on the run from the law, mercenary bands and hermits. Rumors of its mysteries and magic abounded. It was there that Lady Andrea was deternined to go. As the large covered carriage came into the hamlet the local citizens took great notice. Royalty did not visit them there, especially not in carriages. The coachman guided the horses into the pallisade stockade, dismounted, and opened the door. As Lady Andrea stepped into view, a slight murmur rose from the soldiers gathered around. She was a female. Immediately the captain of the local guard approached and knelt before her. He alone had visited the palace and recognized her. "My lady, what is it thou wishes?" "Rise Captain Coventry. (It impressed him that she knew his name, even though she looked it up before she left.) I wish you prepare me a comfortable bed for the night. In the morning my coachman and I will require two of your best horses. That will be all for now." Immediately Coventry left her presence and instructed his wife move their children and belongings from their small cottage in the stockade so that Lady Andrea might spend the night safely and comfortably. He was a little over thirty, but he respected the crown and more than once risked his life for its honor.
