Astra left the five gold coins that she owed Bertha on the table, together
with a note: "Bertha, I'm afraid that I've decided that carnival life is
not for me. Goodbye, and thanks for all the cake." Then she left the
caravan and made her way to Zeke's office. "I've decided that I don't care
for this life," she told him. "I'm leaving immediately."
"I'm sorry to hear that," he replied. "You've been a great attraction. If fortune-telling is not suitable, perhaps you'd consider trying something else? We could train you as an acrobat, or maybe get you an animal act." "No, I'm sorry. My mind is made up." "In that case, if you'd just give me back that leotard before you go. Or if you'd rather, you can pay me for it. Shall we say one gold piece?" "But that's ridiculous! It's not worth a fraction of that." "Well if that's your opinion, you are welcome to leave in the same condition as you arrived." Astra reluctantly handed over one of her five remaining gold pieces and left the office. She supposed that she really ought to head for home. She had already been away far longer than she had anticipated.
