Eye in the sky?! Astra resisted the impulse to roll her eyes, as she did
not want to antagonise her host. It seemed clear that he was just as
crazy as the rest of the population of Allaria, though in his case it
might be merely the result of living alone. But if he wanted water for
the stew, then she was willing enough to oblige. "I'll be happy to do
that for you," she said, "though I'd sooner take my own baton than your
cudgel."
She found the bucket, and set off up the hill, wondering why the well was so far from the hermit's dwelling. The distance was not as far as she had expected, but Rufus was old, and this trek was probably a tiresome ordeal for him. Within a few minutes she arrived at the well, which was surprisingly well built and sheltered with a roof of wooden shingles supported by massive marble arches. Ornate, though weathered carvings adorned the stone arches above the well. Two shepherds were depicted fending their flock from a ravenous pack of wolves, with the Siblings smiling down on them from the heavens. She filled the bucket without any difficulty, and turned back towards the cottage.
