NEQ Writes Itself!

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 28259

NEQ has started to generate episodes and options without the need for any external agency (a.k.a. "authors"). This is due to a self-replicating algorithm which was inadvertantly included in its coding to kick in after a certain number of episodes had been written.

The algorithm involves producing new episodes for each unextended link the programme finds, each of which in turn has a randomly-generated number of links between 1 and 6. So NEQ is now expanding at an exponential rate.

Within 3 days of the start of this phenomenon, 50% of pages on the WWW are NEQ episodes.

The pressure soon begins to tell on the world's IT infrastructure: servers are rapidly overloaded and crash. A feature of the self-replicating algorithm is that if a server becomes overloaded it wipes all non-NEQ files first. At this rate, there will soon be only NEQ episodes on the t'Internet.

However most NEQ authors are oblivious to the situation, as the game is signing its self-generated episodes as "Lots 42".

Only one person can remedy the situation:

  1. the real Lots42
  2. err . . . Sir Fred?
  3. Mark E Smith, vocalist with perennial "cult" British band The Fall
  4. Who cares? Show us a typical NEQ-generated episode!
