"Dealing with them will be good practice for you," Lava Man said. "Besides, to go any other way would mean a lengthy detour."

"What is a cave drake?" Velus asked. "I've never heard of such a creature."

"They are much like giant bats," Lava Man told him. "They have a wingspan of about seven feet. They are villainous, misshapen and slimy. There is a colony of several dozen in the Drake Cavern."

"They sound lovely," Astra said sarcastically.

"We can deal with them easily enough," Lava Man said confidently.

"I'm sure that you are right," Astra responded. "You have your ability to direct fire balls, and we three have our swords." (Astra and Velus's swords had been provided by the Wizard of Kamiro. [218]) Should it come to close combat, Astra was also now armed with twenty sharp claws, though she preferred not to think about that. She had wrapped her chains around her arms, to prevent them from impeding her swordplay.

The first warning that they were almost at the cavern was the smell. "What's that?" Fred said, wrinkling his nose.

"Their guano," Lava Man replied. "It can make the floor of the cavern very slippery, so make sure that you don't lose your footing."

1. Then the tunnel angled sharply to the right, and they saw the cavern just ahead of them.
