Overlooking Something

"Oh, yes," Fred said. "Sorry. Mr Lava Man, I don't suppose you have any ideas for freeing Princess Astra here, do you? The powder that the the Wizard of Kamiro provided for the purpose was a lamentable failure."

"Well, if I direct two more fireballs at her chains, that should do the job. I'd better aim at the points where they are attached to the wall, to allow maximum margin for error."

Having seen what had happened to the gnome, Astra felt a little nervous about this. She shut her eyes and hoped for the best.

But the lava man was right on target. Though the magical chains were resistant even to his fire, the rock splintered where the fireballs hit and the ends of the chains came free.

Having thanked the lava man, Astra dressed herself in the clothes that the Wizard had provided. It was a tricky operation with a long chain attached to each wrist and fingers that ended in claws, but eventually she was finished (though she had to leave the shoes off). The clothes didn't fit that well - the Wizard's wife hadn't been six foot tall - but they were a lot better than nothing.

1. Then they really were ready to leave.
