Alicia and Fred jogged steadily through the woods. They had seen a fair
sized city in the distance when they emerged from the dragon's caves.
Though neither had known a city was so close, they both knew it would be a
good place to hide in. A full hour passed. The sun had fallen and a full moon rose. The two sidled through alleys and crossed empty streets. Fred had left a gold piece clipped to a laundry line in exchange for a flowing green robe. He wasn't sure if the people of this city (identified in road signs as 'New York') would be accepting of furred-people. Their best hope was to get to the public library and investigate the recent news scrolls. (The news agencies hired people who could write swiftly. That and abbreviations for common words allowed a thriving news business). The public library was at the far end of a tree-filled courtyard. Two flights of stairs, thirty feet wide, led down to it. Fred and Alicia bounced down the steps. They were full of leaves and misplaced sandwhich wrappers. Oy. Maybe the city services were on strike. The short, wide doors of the library revealed themselves through the array of trees as they got closer. Fred could see quite an impressive collection of books inside. Even from this distance he recognized the bright gold spine of the 'Empress Adventurers' and the, well, in his reality, ultra-rare scroll of the 'Extra-Special Men' drawn book for children.
