Discretion is the Better Part of Valour

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 24691

Fred had solved one riddle - of what Eritraea was carrying that the brigands had wanted so badly - but he was now left with another: what did she want the dragon's egg for? However the thought of what she might be capable of doing to his comparatively weak female body if she was angry enough strongly suggested that he should not tell her what he had done. His curiosity would therefore have to go unsatisfied for the time being. If they were going to spend a considerable time travelling together, perhaps sooner or later she would let something slip. She might even eventually grow to trust him enough to tell him willingly.

So he carefully wrapped up the egg again in the piece of satin and replaced it in the pack. The remainder of his watch passed uneventfully, and when he estimated that the specified time had passed he woke up Eritraea to take her turn.

He noticed that she immediately glanced over at her pack.

  1. Seemingly satisfied that it had not been tampered with, she said: "Sleep well, Fred."
  2. Then she said angrily: "You've been looking through my pack! Don't attempt to deny it."
