The Wrath of Her Crimes

"No, of course not," Belinda said.

For some reason, Astra was convinced that she was lying. What guilty secret was her sister hiding? "Did you have anything to do with Fred's death?" she asked. "The snake venom isn't usually fatal."

"How could you even think such a thing?" Belinda protested, doing her best to sound like a defamed innocent. But she recalled the old man's words about the curse that he claimed to have put on her: No deed shall go unrecognized for what it is.

Astra's suspicion had now hardened into certainty. Judging by the appalled expression on Carola's face, the same applied to her.

Without another word, Astra drew her sword. Damn! Belinda thought. Why didn't I take Fred's sword when I had the chance?

1. She turned and ran for it.
2. "You surely wouldn't strike me down in cold blood when I'm unarmed?" she said. Astra hesitated, then threw her own sword aside. "No. It will be unarmed combat to the death."
3. "You wouldn't strike me down in cold blood when I'm unarmed?" she said. Astra hesitated for just a moment, then did exactly that.
4. But Astra did not use her sword. Instead she said: "Begone! If I ever see you again I will kill you."
5. Belinda played her only card left... the Truth! (or the nearest thing to it)
