The route back out of the caves was fairly easy for Fred to remember. He would simply
retrace the path that the cat had taken, return to the volcano, and he would then not be far
from the entrance of the cave. He had already taken this path once. But once he reached
the place where the door to the volcano control room should have been, there was simply a
rock wall. Nor did he even feel the intense heat that had caused him for a moment to forget
himself. [9790] Indeed, the wall was inhumanly cold.
"Damn!" shouted Fred. "I could have sworn that the door to the underground volcano was here..." Irena raised her exquisitely arched eyebrows. "Underground volcano?" she said witheringly. The Dragon could probably hear every word we say, and we don't want to give him any weapon to harm us with." "It can look into our souls, though. I am certain now that that apparition we saw that looked like both our mothers was its work." "You're probably right," said Irena, "but I just want to be on the safe side. As a wise man once said, 'I'm not saying what I'm thinking. Hell, I'm not thinking what I'm thinking.'" Her light blue eyes seemed clouded for a moment and she almost turned away in shame. Fred realized that there were probably far deeper reasons that she was reluctant to talk, but decided that honor demanded that he press no further. Just then, the cave echoed with an unholy rumble. The floor under Fred and Irena began to split in two. They tried to escape it, but it was far too late. They fell to the ground in a split second, painfully bruised but oddly unharmed. Above them, they saw
