Maybe this Fred wasn't the dunderhead she had at first thought him, Irena
mused. What he had said made sense, Perhaps, thanks to being a
haberdasher's son rather than of noble birth, he was less wedded to a
notion of honour that said that once you had begun a quest there could not
be even a temporary turning back.
But then something occurred to her that made her think that perhaps Fred was a dunderhead after all. "Wait a minute!" she said. "You're only just back from leaving the caverns to find out what the scroll said. [20799] Why didn't you get better supplies, clothing, armour and fellow companions then?" Fred rubbed his nose in perplexity. Why hadn't he done that? Had something been clouding his mind? "I don't know," he said, "but I still think that it's our best course now." "Very well then," Irena agreed. "But I have a nasty feeling that we aren't going to be allowed to leave the caves as easily as all that, even though you have done so once before."
