A Surprisingly Easy Exit

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 23418

Surprisingly, they found themselves out of the caves in a very short time. They walked up to Frederigo's horse, Gerard, who was tethered up nearby. Irena's horse had been killed by Orcs in the service of the Dragon shortly before she reached the caves. Irena mounted the horse behind Fred.

"It's odd how easily we escaped," said Irena. "You'd think the Dragon would have had some way to hinder us with his power."

"That is interesting," said Fred. "I have a theory. You told me that you were the daughter of a family of mages in Vjoircia, yet you yourself could not work magic. That scroll I translated--I think the reason that I did not seek anything else once I left the caves was that the scroll placed a compulsion on me magically--said that it was important that I rescue you. Perhaps you have something in you that resists and repels magic?"

"I've heard that suggested before," said Irena. "Perhaps its right. I did trigger the chest's alarm spell, but that was not directly cast on me. When people said things like that before, it always made me feel like less than a human. Who knew that the cause of the fact that I was so poor at magic would help me slay a Dragon? I'd look forward to seeing the looks on their faces when they see what I'm about to do."

Fred found himself slightly annoyed. It had taken him a great deal of effort to reach this place in life. Being aided by beautiful women was all veyr well and good, but as far as he was concerned, this was supposed to be his quest. "Don't forget that I aided you, Irena," said Fred.

Irena scoffed. "Well, you did rescue me, I suppose. Never mind. This will only lead to pointless argument."

"You are absolutely right. Killing the Dragon and saving lives is more important than gaining glory." But he still found himself slightly resentful. He changed the subject. "I fear this will be a long journey. To translate the scroll, I had only to find a village with a proficient mage, but to find reinforcements, we shall have to reach the nearest city. From the foothills of the Shreken, that will be a journey of several weeks."

  1. They manage to leave the foothills of the Shreken without trouble.
  2. They are ambushed by Orcs.
