the glazed
look had gone from her eyes. Now seemed to be the right moment to ask her
whether she would
come back to the Kingdom with him. He explained that his supply of torches
was running
low, and that also he wished to consult his family's advisors about the
contents of the scroll.
Somewhat to his surprise, she agreed to come with him. "Whilst my heart wishes to pursue my quest without delay, my head reminds me that since my encounter with the dragon I no longer have torches, food or weapon. I will come with you, since to return to my homeland would mean a far longer journey. I hope that my promise, as a princess of Aqualaria, of eventual repayment will suffice for your weapon-smiths and chandlers to re-equip me." "I will ensure that you get what you need," said Fred. "Thank you," replied Astra, "but I won't accept charity." "Indeed not. It will be up to you, or your family should anything happen to you, to see that I am eventually repaid. Fred would in fact have been happy enough to bear the fairly small cost involved, but he realised that to attempt to do so would have only offended the princess.
