Being a dog is the worst kinda life a man can have.
Every time I meet somebody I just have to sniff their crotch, and then there is the obligatory smelling of the buttocks. I can't control the urge to piss on trees, bushes, flowers, even rocks. Thank the gods there aren't many trees down here, but the rocks are EVERYWHERE!!! Hope you don't mind my speaking to you; it's not like I can talk to the walking tin can or the naked woman who would sooner skewer a man than kiss him. They speak the common language of the Land, but I just...well, I just...you know... I bark. ********** Before long the threesome found a most curious obstacle in their path. Whether magical mirage, natural phenomena or something else couldn't be discerned by the two warriors nor the dog, and what it was was fog. Fog as far as the eye could see. The travelers could see neither walls, ceiling or floor, nor any other feature. All was fog. They stopped, lit another torch, and found that the illumination was far from satisfactory. Silent thoughts of dragon-breath and wizard's spells floated unsaid within each warrior's mind. Of one accord they continued their walk. Fred had his sword in hand while Thessamar had the large bone. They felt for the sides of the earthen walls and took slow, deliberate steps. Their eyes had failed them, but their feet would find the way. This continued for some time until a splish was felt and a splash was heard. Lord Fred's metal boot sunk about a foot into the ground while the soft mud oozed about the toes of the Aqualarian warrior. Mud meant water and water could be friend or foe. They had indeed encountered a subteranean patch of water, yet was it a pond, a lake, or even an underground river? The all-encompassing fog would not allow them to make that assessment. Then Velus barked. Frederigo strained to see what was the cause of the cursed boy's cry. He could barely make sense of the misty swirls let alone see anything within it. Then the barking turned to growling. "Hold!" The voice belonged to Thessamar. Through the fog she was able to see a shape. Her many years within the jungle and the hunting it entailed had trained her eyes quite well. The shape seemed to be floating, or was it skimming? towards the trio. Velus' agitation grew and grew, and how unfortunate that the other two could not comprehend the reason. Velus turned to the warriors and barked excitedly, yet the warriors had eyes only for the coming shape. Finally, with one exasperated yelp, Velus ran back the opposite direction, back through the fog and down deeper into the maze known throughout the Kingdom as the Southern Caves. Fred and Thessamar remained, facing the strange shape coming closer, closer, closer. ************** Stupid! Stupid! Stupid! Didn't they smell it?!? Didn't they feel the hairs raise on their backs?!? Didn't they get that wierd need to bare their teeth and spit? Those poor bastards haven't a clue as to what was coming. Glad I'm not back there right now. Being a dog is the worst kinda life a man can have, but it does have its queer perks.
