An Eyeball, by Any Other Name, is Still an Eyeball

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 20618

"How much longer are you going to keep Karen and Aaron frozen like that?" The Seeker asks, beginning to become worried about them.

Dr. Priceless once again assures The Seeker, in a manner not unlike an adult explaining some complicated theory to a child. "They're fine, just fine! It's like I've said; it's a simple safety precaution! Standard operating procedure in a situation like this! They'll be as good as new when they're released. There's no more harm done in my immobilization spell than what is incurred during an afternoon cat-nap!"

'Good as new'... The Seeker thinks. Seems I've heard this character say that before. Why doesn't it make me feel any more secure that they'll be alright?

"But where were we...oh yes! The eyeball!" There's a distant look in Vincent's eyes as he begins his story.

"Sorry to interrupt..." The Seeker says. "But how do you know this eyeball that Sir Boris has in his picnic basket is anything more than just a regular old eyeball?"

Priceless shakes his head and chuckles. "Well, my good Seeker, it is a regular eyeball! Or at least it would be if it had stayed where it belonged. But you haven't let me explained! I won't be able to answer any of your questions if I continue to be interrupted!" The Doctor nods approvingly at the silence that follows before continuing. "'I've developed an eye' for spotting irregular phenomena, you might say...in regards to your curiosity as to how I know that this eyeball is the eyeball. And, no matter how much of an egotistical, self-righteous moron Sir Boris may be...it is highly improbable he would ever lie about something so important to us all."

Sir Boris snorts and removes his hat, bowing slightly. "I believe that's the kindest remark I've received from you in over fifteen years!"

"Well don't get used to it!" Vincent quips before returning to his story. "...so... anyway, it was a few months ago when I first began to worry. It was during that time that I was able to trace an 'interdimensional missile'...meaning; some clustering of matter or antimatter ( I thank the gods it did not turn out to be the later!) being catapulted through multiple dimensions like a cannonball tearing through multiple castle walls. The 'missile' did not appear to be large...but no matter, the discontinuity it created was unnerving, to say the least..."

The icy autumn winds seemed to have picked up by this point, as the tree limbs overhead creak and groan as their last leaves rustle and gently glide to the forest floor. Their foliage is still thick, however, and the sky is barely visible. But from what little pockets of sky The Seeker can make out in the orange canopy above, it appears that the weather is taking a turn for the worst as gray replaces blue.

"...what was even more alarming," Vincent continues, apparently unconcerned by the worsening weather. "The eyeball decided to land in MY..."

"OUR..." Sir Boris puts in.

"...universe, somewhere in the Shreken Mountains near Allaria. I was petrified! What were the odds of that happening!? An incredible responsibility had suddenly landed on my shoulders, disturbing my relatively peaceful life in my tower! I was completely goose-gangled! I knew I had to do something...but what!? I'd never had contact with anything from a universe SO far away or with as much discontinuity radiating from it's core! Without really thinking, I packed my bags and made for the Shrekken with much haste!

"Now, by means not available to many, I was able to travel to the Shrekken in very little time...but apparently too late. I was able to pinpoint the exact location where the missile had entered but found only a smoldering crater. I took some soil samples from the scene. The earth was still warm there, and that was reassuring. For time is a valuable resource and I feared I was running out of it. I loathed staying near the scene of the entry for too long, for the field of discontinuity was still strong there. I returned to my tower in the Calamari...

"Once there I put the soil samples I had collected under careful scrutiny in the most sterile environment I could conjure up. What I was able to discern was that there were body fragments in the soil; these were the source of the discontinuity that many of my sensitive sensor mechanisms were picking up in trace amounts. Under even more scrutiny, I was able to determine that the organic fragments were once part of an eye...most likely a canine's."

Vincent abruptly stops in the middle of his story and glares at Sir Boris. "Now, before I go on, I deserve an explanation from my knavish friend, Sir Boris. Pure luck, I'm sure, is how he came by that damn eyeball. He has been known to prowl around the haunts of the dragon Kugel who dwells in the very region where I found the eye. He calls it 'scientific research'. Tell me, Sir Boris, where you picnicking in some pleasant meadow when fate delivered this exotic eye in into your undeserving lap?..eh?..."

  1. Sir Boris explains his part....
  2. Dancing gorilla?
