Sir Boris Explains

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 20620

Vincent abruptly stops in the middle of his story and glares at Sir Boris. "Now, before I go on, I deserve an explanation from my knavish friend, Sir Boris. Pure luck, I'm sure, is how he came by that damn eyeball. He has been known to prowl around the haunts of the dragon Kugel who dwells in the very region where I found the eye fragments. He calls it 'scientific research'. Tell me, Sir Boris, where you picnicking in some pleasant meadow when fate delivered this exotic eye in into your undeserving lap?..eh?..."

"Actually," Sir Boris replies smugly. "I was in the region during that particular time. I've been studying the dream-haunted Shrekken for a number of years now and have taken a special interest in the vast network of caverns and tunnels known as the Southern Caves. Infact, it might interest you to know that I've taken up friendly relations with many of the inhabitants of said caves. When the eyeball made it's landing, I was having tea with a correspondence...a gnome..."

"A gnome?" The Seeker and Doctor ask in unison.

"That's right, a gnome. They are a shy and reclusive lot, preferring to live in the more isolated corners of the world. But they are a remarkably motivated and industrious race, far more advanced in the fields of science and magic than we humans give them credit for."

The Seeker nods. "Kind of like the Japanese," He adds.

"That's right!" Sir Boris replies. "Kind of like the Japanese from your own Terra...and just as suicidal! You won't find an indolent bone in their body. Their only draw back, as I have stated, is their fearless and suicidal method when it comes to applying their knowledge of the cosmos. They pay little heed to their own safety or well- being in the name of advancing..."

"Boris! Enough!" Vincent cuts his old friend off in the middle of his sentence. "We don't have time for gnome-lore!"

"Fine," Sir Boris waves a hand dismissively in Vincent's direction. "No time. Why don't you have that tattooed on your forehead? So... I was discussing current affairs with a gnome called Chucky, when our conversation (I believe it had something to do with the recent influx of goblins and trolls in the region) was interrupted by an eyeball hurling through the fabric of our universe. We could feel the shockwaves from his home in the Caves, not far from the scene of the disturbance. The shockwaves were like nothing I had ever experienced...the very reality around us was changed! The changes were subtle and not at first noticeable. The discontinuity manifested itself in various ways (For instance, the tea we had been drinking turned an entirely different color and flavor). We had no idea what had just occurred...we feared the Dragon Kugel (also known as Deltumnimos) had awakened from one of its 'naps' to wreak havoc on the southern fringes of Allaria. Dragon-fire has been known to create disturbances of such magnitude. This was not an irrational idea, for as of late the lingwyrm had become restless and had taken up its old habits of snacking on maidens and plundering villages once again. Most of the gnome's machines were fried to the crisp after the shockwaves hit, but we were able to locate the source of the disruption..."

Vincent taps his foot impatiently. "AND?..."

"Fine, fine!" Sir Boris sighs. "To make a long story short; we found the charred eyeball in the crater, analyzed it, and discovered it was a ticking time bomb. By that I mean it was the most unstable piece of organic material I had ever encountered in my research in the field of biophysics. Chucky demanded that I take the eyeball and destroy it or at least take it as far away from his home as was possible. And I did.

"I must admit, I was deeply disturbed by the eye's power. Everywhere it went reality would alter slightly. I knew I needed to find a way to contain the eyeball's energy without destroying it. I couldn't bring myself to just throw it away, not without learning more about it and from where it came. I decided to take it to Verboten.

"My beloved Verboten, a haven for technological and magical research. I have many friends there, as did Vincent at one time, and with their help I was able to find a way to contain the eyeball's power. Although I was no closer to determining where it came from or how it had gotten here, I was (like Vincent) able to determine it had once belonged to a canine. A couple of months later I was still in the middle of studying the eyeball when I received an urgent message from Chucky. He had been a busy little beaver during this whole period, and had repaired most of his machines and contraptions. An alarm had been set off on one of his machines used for spying on other universes (that's right Vincent, you aren't the only one, BELIVE me). According to the gnomish technomancer something was wrong, very wrong. Discontinuity was spreading like a virus in the Multiverse. He conjectured it had been triggered by the eyeball, but it had spread outwards like the ripples in a pond after a stone has been tossed into it. Your arrival here in Zendara, Seeker, was one of the most profound changes caused by the dog's eye..."

Chills go down The Seeker's spine as the wind continues to pick up it's ferocity. So far, he's just about as confused as he was when the two old farts showed up. With all of the minor plot intracies he had to focus on before, all of this information is just making everything more complicated. Well, at least he's managed to stay alive this time around...he continues his patiently listening...

  1. Sir Boris continues...
