Bad Tidings

Karen nods. "He said a group of soldiers invaded the village last night. Only a few of the villagers survived, and the soldiers took everything they could."

This is terrible! The Seeker realizes that his fears have been confirmed. He was afraid that perhaps this wasn't the original storyline, but only and alternate version. He had bgun to wonder if perhaps it was when Mark confessed his feelings, but he had told himself that that could have happened in the original. There's no way to deny this, though. Reality is still in trouble.

"Have you seen the village?" he asks. "The man may have been lying."

"No," Karen says. "As soon as he told me I came to get you."

"Let's go, then," he says.

The two of them leave the house and start toward the village.

1. When they reach it, they see that it has been sacked.
