There has been no mistake. Most of the village buildings are smoking
ruins. Karen sees
a woman whom she knows, and asks her what happened. "They came at dead of
night and
torched all the buildings," the woman says. "Everyone was in bed, and a
lot of people
burnt to death. They say it was the New Amazons' doing." "I don't believe
that," says
Karen. "They would never do something like that." "Ssh," says the
woman. "That's not
a wise thing to say around here."
Karen takes The Seeker to one side, where they can't be overheard, and they discuss what to do. "There's no point in delaying any further," Karen says. "We can't get any supplies now. Let's go home. We'll pack a change of clothes, toilet items, and our share of what little food is in the larder, leave Father a note, and set off for the New Amazons' camp at once. Food is going to be scarce around here for a while, and we may as well go hungry on the road as at home. From what I've heard, it's only about a four day journey anyway." The Seeker is surprised. This seems to be another discrepancy from the original story, where he seems to recall that the camp was much nearer to the sisters' village. Since it now seems to be several months earlier than in the original, the camp could move later on, he supposes. "Shouldn't we stay here and do what we can to help?" he asks. "There must be people who need nursing, relatives to be sent messages, food to be brought in from neighbouring villages, shelters to be erected - all sorts of things." They discuss it and:
