The look of guilt on Mark's face and of alarm on "Alyssa"'s tells Karen
all she needs
to know. The Seeker half expects her to fly into a rage, but she doesn't.
Instead she
says very quietly and very calmly to Mark: "I think you'd better leave."
Mark says:
"But..." Then he thinks better of arguing, and departs.
When he has gone, Karen asks The Seeker: "So how long has this been going on?" "How long has what been going on?" The Seeker says, for want of anything better. For the first time Karen seems angry. "Don't play silly games with me, Alyssa." Then she goes on, more quietly: "There's no need. I've been looking for an excuse to get rid of Mark for some time. To be frank, he's a bit of a drip. Now I can drop him without feeling guilty. And if you and he are in love, that's fine by me." The Seeker decides that he has nothing to lose by telling the truth, and tells Karen the whole of his conversation with Mark. He finishes: "I was just trying to let Mark down gently. I don't love him, but he seems like a nice boy." Karen says: "In that case, I think the best thing we can do is bring forward our departure to join the New Amazons. That way you will be rid of Mark. Don't worry about hurting his feelings. He'll forget you soon enough." The Seeker worries that Mark might follow them, but he lets that pass for the time being. Instead he says: "How is it you're back so soon?"
