Fred picked himself up from the dirt, and resumed running after Stralene
and Jake. He wondered why the warrior woman had denied being royalty. He
was sure that
when he
had first met her she had said: "Normal chains are far too weak to restrain
a true warrior princess." [42] But perhaps he had imagined that? After
all, he had been under
a lot of stress lately. Looking
back on his memories of events in the caves, they seemed to have taken on
the quality
of some weird dream. Another thing was worrying him. How had Stralene got
out
of her chains? Surely he hadn't dreamt that bit? Was it possible that she
was not
the innocent victim of the dragon that she had seemed?
Once they were away from the scene of the ambush, to Fred's relief Stralene slowed to a brisk walk. They had been traveling in silence for several minutes, but that was now broken. "Hey, where are we going?" Jake asked. "Back to Aqualaria," Stralene replied. "But I don't want to go there," Jake protested. "I want to go to the dragon's lair. I made an agreement with Lord Frederigo that I could have the dragon's treasure so long as he could have you." Fred saw a look of astonishment on Stralene's face, which he feared would soon turn to fury. Why couldn't Jake have been more discreet? "We hadn't got as far as sealing the agreement," he said awkwardly. "We were interrupted by the monkey demons. Besides, we thought that you were still a prisoner and that we'd need to free you." Hmm, perhaps he could have put that rather better, he thought. "It's quite all right," Stralene said sweetly. "I am naturally delighted at the prospect of having an Allarian noble as my lord and master. Was my lord thinking of making me his wife, or shall I serve him as his slave?"
