Even before Fred and Jake could make proper and official their agreement
the woods
about them were filled with a strange and awful noise. Screeches and
howls came from all quarters and the sound of beating air.
"By all!" screamed Jake as he ducked to the dirt even as the first of many satanic monkey demons flew into his path. Fred, too, hit the ground but not before having the skin of his back nearly ripped off by the ethereal claws of the nether-dimension monstrosities. "Aaaaaighhhhhhh!" he screamed. "Aaaaaaiiiiiiigggggggghhhhhh right back at yah!!!!!!!" screamed the demon monkeys even louder. Fred and Jake began crawling about on their knees, trying to leave the place where they were. There was a litter of sticks and stones on the ground and all was covered in a green-grey moss. The oaks above helped shield the two heros from the brunt of the demon- herd, but the monsters did not cease their ambush. Again Fred's mind whirled back to all that was wrong-- he had no horse, no sub-vassals, no crossbowmen, longbowmen, no peasants with pike and fork, not even the aid of the Flemish mercenaries or the stealthy Circus Freaks of the Principality of Canadia. ~~now I'm gonna die by the claws of demon monkeys!!!~~ Suddenly a new cry was heard: "AAAAEEEEEEIIIIIIIIIGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!" The herd of demons screeched and howled and hooted, but then they all dispersed! Fred and Jake looked up and saw a woman. She was gorgeous! She was young and tall, athletic and full-breasted, and dressed in a leathery skin that seemed more bat than bull, more gator than deer. "Whoooo!" she sighed with trembling satisfaction. "That was tricky. Now boys, we don't have much time. I scared em, I spooked em, I even stunk em out with this here talisman of battered goat innards, but them be a herd of satanic monkey demons from the ShadowsRealm!" "It's you!" yelled Fred as he got up from the dirt. "You're the Warrior Princess from Aqualaria!" The girl looked a bit confused at that. "Uh, no... I never said that. I mean yeah, I'm from Aqualaria, but I'm simply a chosen warrior, not of any royal Family. My name is Stralene." "Well, before we get all touchy-feely we better get outta this wood before those mangey mutts return!" said Jake. "By the way, I'm Jake." And with that Stralene began to run, she looked back only once to make sure the men were following her. Stralene knew the area, it was she who had given Fred the directions to the Wizard's home, after all. She was leading them to the only safe area she knew of: home. Her home. Aqualaria. Meanwhile Fred was trying keep up, he was tired, he was hungry, he was bleeding, and he still hadn't introduced himself properly to the beautiful maiden. He also wondered how she would take to the news that it was her own instruction to him which led to the wizard's death by accident and deceit. But then his thoughts swerved to the rock in front of his big toe - oops, too late. Fred's face hit the dirt, again.
