Or so she thought. She was startled by a raspy whisper from her left. "Lieutenant? Are you okay?"

"Doctor McCoy?" she asked. "Where are you?"

"Strapped to the other diagnostic bed," he grumbled. "That whatsit they have on your head didn't hurt you, did it?"

"You mean you don't know what it is?"

McCoy made a scoffing sound. "Young lady, I've no idea what that contraption is or where it came from. First I saw of it was Chapel and Collins wheeling it in here while you were out."

As Fred pondered this piece of information, the door to Sickbay opened again.

1. Christine Chapel entered with a smile. "Wonderful News, Uhura - we can easily correct your problem! You'll be one of us in no time!"
2. Christine Chapel entered with a frown. "I'm sorry, Uhura, but we can't help you - you'll be kept alive to bear your child, but under heavy guard."
3. Yeoman Janice Rand ducked inside. "Nyota! Thank God, you're not affected either! We've got to get to the bridge and stop them!"
4. Captain Kirk entered. "Bones! Uhura! Are you all right?"
5. A lovely Oriental woman who Fred couldn't identify entered, an odd smile on her face.
6. A Klingon, cradling an injured arm, burst into the room.
7. An alien man with purplish skin entered.
