Fred/Uhura Undergoes a Brain Scan

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 19353

"Thanks," Fred said. "That's very good of you."

If Chapel recognised the sarcastic tone of Fred's voice, she did not visibly react to it. Saying nothing further, she placed some sort of a helmet on Fred's head. The helmet was attached by twin cables to a bank of machinery covered in buttons, switches and winking lights of various colours (though predominantly amber). Apparently Uhura had not taken any great interest in medical technology, for Fred found no memories that would tell her what the device was. Given what Chapel had told her, though, she assumed that it must be some sort of neural scanner.

Chapel pressed a button that evidently started the scan, for additional lights came on, whilst others changed colour from amber to green. Fred had expected to feel something - a tingling, maybe, or even pain. But in fact she felt nothing out of the ordinary at all.

After a minute or so, the machine shut itself off, and Chapel examined the computer screen displaying the results.

  1. She pursed her lips, but said nothing.
  2. "It seems that your brain waves show many of the characteristics of a man's, Uhura," she said.
  3. "Your brain patterns are radically different from when you were last scanned six months ago," she said. "You aren't Uhura anymore. Who are you?"
  4. "There don't seem to be any abnormalities that would account for your deviant behaviour, Uhura," she said.
  5. "I've identified the problem," she said. "A simple shot should cure you."
  6. Meanwhile, up on the bridge, the person filling in for Uhura while away gets a distress call....
