Frederigo agreed to this and gave Astra the stick. It was more important
now to worry about whatever was in the woods. He and Astra could sort out
what was going on with her (or his) memory in the morning.
Astra took the stick. "Stand with your back to me," she said, "I think they're getting closer." Fred did as he was told and turned to face to the opposite direction of Astra. Suddenly, he felt something warm press onto his back. "Is that you?" he asked out loud. "Yes," Astra replied. "If our backs are together we know where we are." This seemed to suit Fred and he kept facing the woods, on the lookout. Astra's back was quite warm, and had a soothing feeling to it. Despite their vulnerability in the woods, Fred felt comforted and safe with Astra, almost like she was supposed to protect him, although he knew a gentleman would make sure it was the other way around. Suddenly, Fred heard a loud sound from somewhere off to his right. He took a glance and saw nothing, but got the strange feeling he was being watched...
